Rural Value-Added and Startup Businesses
The University of Nebraska Rural Initiative works to support Nebraska rural entrepreneurs in value-added agriculture and small business creation and transition.
-
The Rural Initiative supports a PTAC (Procurement Technical Assistance Center) officer who travels throughout central and western Nebraska to help businesses who wish to obtain government contracts.
-
The website, sponsored by the University of Nebraska and Three Pillars Media, is "an educational resource, a cross-section of Nebraska’s business community or even just a great place to get the word out about your next big idea. Through our business profiles, entrepreneurial news and growing video archive, we hope to be the first place Nebraska’s future business owners stop on their way achieving any and all goals they possess." Click above to visit the site.

Funding from the University of Nebraska Rural Initiative supports Roger Wilson of the Department of Agricultural Economics, who has created budgets using an Excel spreadsheet for selected horticultural crops (including some grown using a high-tunnel) and for small animal production. In addition, a “Local marketCALC” spreadsheet was created to enable local food marketers to analyze their marketing channels. To access these spreadsheets or a pdf version, click on the underlined link above.
